Hope in Despair

"As a shattering of my bones,
my adversaries revile me,
While they say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”
Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God."
Psalm 42: 10, 11

Dear Father,
There are times when the words of my enemies seem to shatter my bones, my soul, and my strength. My adversary prompts them and my own voice is even tempted to join in.

Yet, I rejoice that I can stand upon the Rock of my salvation! In You I can stand unafraid and unwavering. No one can snatch me from Your hand!

I will wait on You today, LORD. I will not lash out in return, I will not fall into despair. I choose to praise You through no matter what comes today and the rest of my days. I not only trust You with my eternity, I trust You with my today.

I lift my countenance to You! I pray in the name of Jesus, with praise on my lips, and hope in my heart.

Rings, Rainbows, and Reminders

September 10, 2014 rainbow. Photo credit: Ben Sturner @leverageagency
It was a beautiful sight. A rainbow formed in the heavens and anchored at the World Trade Center building on the eve of the 14th anniversary of an attack on that very site.

September 11, 2001 the United States was attacked. A date that will live in infamy, and be etched on the hearts of this generation. Each anniversary of that date there are many celebrations of heroism and stories told of those nearly 3,000 souls whose lives were taken that day. We have now erected new buildings and memorials as we both celebrate the heroism and mourn the loss of people who most likely did not wake with the idea that day would be their last.

Rainbows are a reminder from God that He made an everlasting covenant with every living creature of all flesh on the earth, His sign to us that “never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.” Genesis 9:15. What a precious sign we have, a visible reminder that God remembers and keeps His word. I like to think of it as God's wedding ring to us. He reminds us He is still wearing His.

A significant part of the promise is not to be overlooked. God did look on the earth and saw that it was filled with corruption and violence, and the wickedness was great and the thoughts of the hearts of men was only evil continually. His judgment was destruction of the unrighteous. There was a righteous man, Noah. He and his family were preserved through this judgment and the rainbow was given as a sign that God will always keep His promises.

We need reminders, because it behooves us to remember. The events of September 11, 2001 came at the hand of those who do not believe in God, and do not know Him. They will face a time of judgment, for God is still righteous and still sees. He will return “dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction.” 2 Thessalonians 1:8,9.

We need to remember that
  • He sees our wickedness and thoughts of our hearts,
  • He is the righteous judge and will execute judgment,
  • He will return and bring with Him retribution for unbelievers,
  • We need to earnestly trust Him,
  • We need to eagerly seek and share Him for we do not know which day will be our last.

Father,
We see reminders all around us of our own wickedness, and still see Your promise shining in the heavens. We know You alone are righteous and we must be clothed in Your righteousness in order to enter into Your kingdom. Thank You for coming to earth as a man, taking our sins upon Yourself, and paying the penalty for our unrighteousness. Thank You for the reminders all around us that You are with us.

I pray that each person whose eyes read these words will look to you before their last days on earth, and give their hearts to You. I pray You will help us to be aware of Your presence and share Your truth with all those who need to hear. Give us prompting to point the world to You – our only hope.

The Chickadee Conflict

Chickadee home.
It is hard to resist being outside when the snow has just faded, and the first bloomers of the year begin to appear.  The ornamental cherry trees are showing all their bloomers to the sheer delight of all who have endured the winter misery.  The ornamental pears are quietly shedding their early blooms as if another snowfall has sneaked in on us.

The animals have also begun their spring projects, mainly that of preparing for their crops, well, babies.  The chickadee family we were  watching so happily build in a new housing project in our yard, encountered a problem. (You may remember their decision process in Chickadee Choices.) A sparrow problem.  A herd of sparrows decided they liked the location, and the furnishings. The leader of the pack, Mr. Sparrow proceeded to move in, chasing away the tinier (and outnumbered) Mr. and Mrs. Chickadee.

As the master of the yard, I stepped in.  I had a talk with the sparrows, and explained that the chickadee family was here first, had provided the nesting material, and they needed to find another spot for their brood.  They left.

An hour later, they were back.  With a little research, we found that a certain size hole would deter the sparrows while allowing the chickadees entrance.  So, with a simple pointing of my finger, voila! Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome modified the entrance with just such an opening.

If only I had recorded what happened next.  Mr. Sparrow hardly slowed down on his first attempt to go in the door he had frequented over the last day.  He came to an abrupt stop when he couldn't get his middle through the door.  With his head inside, and his belly and legs dangling outside he struggled and pushed with his little bird feet with no success.  That round belly simply would not fit through the door anymore.  How embarrassing!  He had a few words for the situation and took out his frustration with the obviously faulty opening.  He pecked, looked, tried and re-tried for the better part of a day, while his herd dared not say a word at the comical situation.

God sees your situation.  I am no master gardener, but try very hard to provide the best for the plants, and critters that I invite to live in my yard, providing food, water, accommodations and protection for them.  That reminds me of how very much more my Lord provides for me.  He sees both my needs and my trials, even knows them before I do.

God did not take them out of the yard.  They still had an obligation to come back, and finish their mission.  So do we.  Rather than becoming discouraged, we can count on God to make a way, when we see no possible way for us to do what He has asked us to do.  Sit back, pray, and wait for Him to let you know what to do.  He might move you, or He might move the trouble.

Don't become discouraged.  The chickadees might have thought all was lost.  Never would they be able to fight off such a formidable opponent.  They could have given up on the spot, and not even tried to have a family this year.  They could have sulked, and pouted, and grumbled to all the neighborhood birds about the ill fated situation and stomped off in defeat.

They didn't.

We saw, and provided.  They didn't have to ask, we knew, and took action.

Don't overlook His provision.  If Mr. and Mrs. C had left to never return, they would have missed the provision.  They could have relied on their own experience and expertise, and abilities, and missed out on a far better plan.

That day in Jerusalem that Jesus entered the city on a donkey He was hailed as "the King Who comes in the name of the Lord", just as prophesied.  He knew what we needed and was about to provide it for us.  Later that week He willingly gave up His life for our sins, yours and mine.   That day, as He approached the city, He wept.  Not for what He was about to endure, but for those who would not see it, for those who were going to ignore His provision, and suffer unbelievable horrors in the coming days because of their unbelief.  They were rich in religion, but were missing the Savior.  His desire was that they would recognize Him.  He longed to gather them as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but they would not have it.  He was right there, and they didn't recognize Him, and didn't want to.

He is here today too, right there with you.  I pray you recognize Him, before it is too late.  I pray you do not cause Him to weep over you.

Precious Father in heaven, thank You for providing for my needs even when I didn't know I needed You.  Thank You for loving me so much that You paid the most vile and costly debt I owed.

Thank You for the chickadees right outside the window who give evidence of Your strong and mighty hand all around us as we struggle through life situations that seem overwhelming.  Thank You for reminding us that You see, and we should not give up.

Give us tender hearts to see those who do not recognize You.  Help us to grieve over them, just as You were moved to tears over those who were likewise blinded.

Help the very one reading this to also see You, recognize You and trust You with their very lives, and to share You every day.

Dancing With Jesus

My old ballet shoes.
I enjoyed tap, ballet and jazz lessons as a girl, but that doesn’t make me much of a dancer these decades later.  I admire those lithe bodies that can weightlessly and effortlessly move with such grace and beauty, but no longer have a body capable of any such movement.  So, I watch and enjoy the performances.

I find particular beauty in ballroom dancing, especially the waltzes.  The gentleman takes the lady by the hand and leads her around the room in mirrored movement.  It is lovely to behold them gaze into the other’s eyes and focus solely upon their partner and the dance they share.

In the darkest times of my life God has lifted me by the hand, and looked me in the eye, and walked me to a place of peace and comfort – that passes all understanding.  It is a waltz of sorts - Him leading me by the hand, me following with focus solely on Him.  When I find myself in His arms, His peace overshadows all that is going on around me.  Maybe you too have had life experiences that left you nowhere to go but on your knees to His arms.  It is a wonderful place to be.

Dance With Jesus From Grief to Grace
A new friend and sister in Christ, Susan B. Mead, has written a book entitled Dance With Jesus, From Grief to Gracehttp://www.amazon.com/Dance-With-Jesus-Grief-Morgan/dp/1630473073/  In it she introduces us to her very normal life, and acquaints us with her loving and endearing family members, like our very own.  When tragedy strikes, and grief hits and hits hard, she is given a precious gift. A gift of grace to make it through this otherwise unbearable time.  You will love her tender heart and loving spirit as she walks you through this part of her life journey, offering insight into this gift.  She openly shares both the depth of the grief and the overflowing bounty of this gift that is also available to you.

You will need a hanky or two, but will also rejoice in the lovely picture she details.  It is an easy read, suitable for sharing with someone who needs to know they are not alone, someone who needs to hear there is hope in Christ - even when the hopeless shuffle seems to be the only dance they know.  If you are willing to take His hand – He will lead you to that place of peace. #DanceWithJesusBook

Danny GokeyHope In Front Of Me

Father, how thankful I am for the times You have shown me what I could not find on my own.  How thankful I am that You know my pain and hold me when I can not hold myself.  How thankful I am that You give us grace to waltz through the pain into hope, never alone, but with You.

If you need a little hope, or if you have hope to share, you are welcome to leave a note here.
